Scorpion 2

The Scorpion 2 dry-coupled remote access ultrasonic scanner provides greater efficiency and improved data acquisition in the inspection and measurement of wall thicknesses of storage tanks and other structures such as vessels and offshore installations. Compliant with API 650/653, it is the perfect solution for in-service inspection of your assets.

Benefits

Applications

  • Reduces the risks of working at heights, it is no longer necessary to install scaffolding or use cranes to perform measurements.
  • High scroll speed completes a 10 meter scan in less than a minute.
  • 3-component system for faster installation.
  • Tracking and floating UT gates for repeatable and reliable results.
  • Higher probability of detection (PoD) compared to spot reading.
  • Dry-coupled transducer wheel (no coupler required) for quick and easy setup.
  • Remote access up to 50 m (164 ft).
  • Inspection of storage tank walls.
  • Inspection of the roof of storage tanks.
  • Ships.
  • Offshore facilities.

Inspection Standards

Traditional storage tank roof or wall inspection techniques, such as spot readings with a handheld UT thickness gauge, can be misleading due to their low probability of detection (PoD). This can result in incomplete corrosion rate and risk-based inspection (RBI) calculations. Scorpion2 records thickness measurements along a vertical line, even in the heat affected zone (HAZ) or 25 mm (1 inch) from the plate weld, as recommended by EEMUA, resulting in increased PoD for a more accurate corrosion assessment.

EEMUA also claims that walking on tank roofs can be dangerous. The condition and thickness of the ceiling tiles must be confirmed before allowing access. Scorpion2 can perform this task remotely, reducing the need for personnel access to the roof.

Ultrasonic transducer design

The unique dry coupled ultrasonic transducer wheel eliminates the need for a coupler or constant water supply. The double crystal ultrasonic transducer combined with a transducer wheel allows for quick and easy setup.

Scanner

The location of the transducer wheel allows thickness measurements to be made in the critical heat affected zone (HAZ), 25 mm (1 inch) from the weld. Four independent motor magnetic wheels and tires give the Scorpion2 the ability to easily roll over 12.7mm (0.5in) bumps and excellent grip in all conditions.

Active lifting and balancing of the transducer wheel

Unique to Scorpion 2, active transducer wheel lift raises the wheel when measurements are not being collected, extending the life of the transducer tire. Active transducer wheel balancing makes it easier and faster to set up the transducer prior to inspections, increasing repeatability.

Batteries

Scorpion 2 comes with two lithium-ion battery packs for continuous on-site operation. It uses a battery mounted inside the scanner, eliminating the need for a separate power supply and reducing the weight of the system.
